The Project.

Our client came to us to design a seasonal match making app based aimed a college aged users. With Valentine's Day around the corner at the time, a focus on simplicity was imperative in order to launch with enough lead time to test the app on one campus before a wider launch at the end of the spring semester.

The App.

Top5 is a dating app based on a popular matching game played at some college campuses around the United States. The concept is simple, add 5 people you'd like to match with and they will receive an anonymous invite to submit their own matches.

When two users match, they're informed; if no matches are found, the invite remains anonymous.

Making a List.

User’s add their top five choices of people they would to match with one of two ways, through their phone contacts or through adding their Instagram handle. An invite would then be sent to those without accounts through either a text message or being tagged on Instagram.

This approach obviously was not without it challenges. One thing we did was rigorously testing the messaging used in texts to ensure messages would be well received.

Matches.

Top5's seasonal aspect relied on releasing matches on specific days and special occasions, such as Valentine’s Day or the last day of a semester, in order to generate a buzz around campus leading up to the day.

Not getting matched with someone on your list isn't the end of the journey; those who are a bit more adventurous can choose to me matched with someone at random.

Monetizing Top5.

The intention was to make Top5 a free app to use, but given that there are costs associated with running it, the client wanted to explore various ways to recoup some costs. Ideas included allowing users to send matches virtual gifts as well as unlocking additional list spots through a purchase or by viewing an ad.
